REWORK: Indispensable summer reading
By Jason Fried and David Heinemeier Hansson
Jason Fried is co-founder and CEO of 37signals, a web-based software development firm, and co-author of the books REWORK, Getting Real, and REMOTE. David Heinemeier Hansson is a Danish programmer and the creator of the popular Ruby on Rails web development framework and the Instiki wiki, he is also a partner at 37signals. They are young, creative, successful and talented. Today we talk about their common efforts through his acclaimed book REWORK.
REWORK is about new ways to conceptualize working and creating. Scott Rosenberg called it "a minimalist manifesto that's profoundly practical. In a world where we all keep getting asked to do more with less, the authors show us how to do less and create more." Basically anything you hear over and over in the business world will be challenged by this interesting work.
The book is a New York Times Bestseller, separated into about 12 chapters with each having very short, straight-forward points that are discussed in few pages. Some of the essays you will find in the book talk about takedowns, productivity, hiring, competitors, progress, promotion, damage control or evolution.
This is the kind of book that aims to rock the business world. Some of the ideas that been developed are:
· Long-term business planning is guessing.
· The easiest, most straightforward way to create a great product or service is to make something you want to use.
· A strong stand is how you attract superfans.
· No time is no excuse.
· Forget the exit strategy; you need a commitment strategy.
· Avoid outside investors.
· Break your estimates into smaller bites.
· Focus on yourself and not your competition.
With an agile and entertaining format reading and with some brilliant, ingeniously argumented and inspiring ideas, is a very attractive material to add to the reading list this summer. Are you ready to learn more about how to do less and create more?
